Waiting on a Train: Seattle King Street Station

“I’m studying and working in Vancouver and came to visit family in Seattle. But I’m actually from Pretoria, South Africa. In Africa, public transport is not great, and we don’t have public trains traveling between the larger cities, so it’s nice here in America.
“Everything is different here. There are big skyscrapers, and the mountains with the snow, and the water all around—it’s exceptional. Travel is important because I think it can make anybody a bit more open-minded, and it gives exposure to other cultures and other ways of doing things.”

“I’m going home to Portland. When I ride the train, I notice the families because I’m always traveling for work and missing my son. I see kids running around and families who are all sharing headphones or playing cards. I notice strangers striking up conversations with each other, and sometimes that happens to me too. Or I’ll notice that someone’s reading a book I’ve read that’s really good. Usually what I do is just have a drink and read a book or listen to music. It’s so relaxing. I read Girl on a Train, which was a good one to read on the train.”

“I am originally from Trinidad. I came here almost three years ago. Now I live in Bellevue with my son and his family. Most of my relatives and friends are here, so I don’t really miss Trinidad. I’m going to the East Coast for two months to visit my sisters and brothers.
“I like riding the train. It’s very comfortable and peaceful. And we don’t have to fasten seat belts.”

“For Americans, the way we travel is blindly. We’re not aware. The Europeans, they watch everything. Maybe it’s the size of our country. We don’t really have to learn how to assimilate so we just kind of blindly go through. In Europe, you can go through three countries in two hours.”

“I’m from Chicago, and I’m going to Portland. I have family and friends there. I had some time on my hands this time around, and obviously, it’s a different experience than flying. I wanted to try something different. Riding the train is much calmer. I can take my own stuff, and I don’t have to worry too much about all the security and the mess. I think people like me appreciate having an alternative mode of transport.”
